PPM's History

In 1970 August J. Becker III started his career in emergency services as an ambulance provider for a volunteer ambulance company in Virginia Beach.   After satisfying a military obligation, he re-entered the volunteer service by joining a volunteer fire and ambulance company in Maryland.   In 1975, Mr. Becker became a CPR instructor.   After teaching for a year he showed initiative and became a CPR instructor trainer.   In 1977, Mr. Becker became a paramedic with the federal government.   During that time he was awarded several letters of accommodation for actively training the civilian and military personnel in CPR.   In 1980, Mr. Becker received the Founders Award from the American Heart Association.

After many years experience as a medical provider, Mr. Becker realized that the best way to save lives would be to open an American Heart Association training center to teach CPR to the general public.   This training center would later be known as Paramedical Personnel of Maryland (PPM).   In 1990, Paramedical Personnel of Maryland was incorporated.   In 1991, PPM added the National Safety Council curriculum, which enabled the company to teach first aid skills.   This addition was important because Mr. Becker realized that a large portion of emergency calls require basic first aid.   PPM received several awards through the National Safety Council.   The next step for PPM was to add the American Safety and Health Institute curriculum.   This addition allowed PPM to teach high quality CPR, First Aid, and Safety programs.   PPM has continued to evolve.   As reported by the American Heart Association, PPM is the 22nd largest training center in the USA.

Early in 1998, PPM started providing medical/rescue personnel to Bethlehem Steel Corporation and Harford County Public Schools.   In 1999, Joseph M. Woods was added to the PPM family to run the growing EMS and Rescue Division.   Early in 2000, Mr. Woods started the Maryland commercial ambulance licensing process to have PPM recognized by the State of Maryland as an EMS and rescue company.   Dr. Eric C. Nager M.D. joined PPM in late 2000 as PPM's first Medical Director.   PPM purchased its first ambulance and it was licensed as a Maryland commercial ambulance in 2001.   PPM currently provides medical staffing for Bechtel International, University of Maryland sporting events, and at many other types of events for private companies.   PPM also provides EMS and rescue personnel for ISG (formerly Bethlehem Steel) Sparrows Point Plant, and medical/security stand-by for other construction and recreational sites across the state.

In mid 2003, PPM added an advanced life support and basic life support medical transport division.

In 2005, PPM added a 4,000 sq ft EMS & Rescue Safety Supply store in Bel Air, Maryland. We currently stock the best EMS and Rescue Supplies on the market today and sell them at the lowest prices around.
